The Dance Diary

To create the 'Dance Diary', Iwanson International invited dance photographer VRENI ARBES to follow the school throughout a whole schoolyear during classes, rehearsals and performances. The aim is to offer the visitor an intimate view, the backstage so to speak of a professional dance program.
Balance is a central theme for Ryan Mason, an extremely experienced dancer from California. Ryan has danced with the José Limòn Company, he has performed in musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar and Annie Get Your Gun but he has also been rehearsal director at the State Theatre in Kassel.
That is an enormous variety of style and technique and that's maybe how Ryan found the two particular aspects dance always has: balance and gravity.
So looking at the pictures, in the first set you will see how Ryan works with balance. Students are carrying objects while dancing a given variation. An easy and obvious way for the students to realize the power of gravity and the importance of balance. He or she who drops the object has lost control.
